An article about the making of a memoir, by Vig Gleeson, author of Speak #TRUTH Lies

Making Memoir

I can’t believe I’m here, that I’ve made it this far. It’s been seven years!

Seeing β€˜The End’ at the bottom of that page, three weeks ago, sparked excitement all over. Today I received feedback from my rock band of writer-friends after they read my memoir – for the first time.  My band of sisters have sprinkled their special magic over Speak #TRUTH Lies, I look forward to following their guidance and making her shine. πŸŒŸ

The endΒ of writing marks the beginning of marketing in earnest. I’ve been looking forward to this part for so long. I get to be online and social and build websites and newscasts and design a book cover, and figure out how to publish and then sell the book. I love all this, especially the community and tech stuff. I’m playing with graphics and words to get clear of what I want to do – now when Speak #TRUTH Lies is nearly ready to ‘fly the nest’. I want to write all about my Life & Memoir writing journey and would love you to join my email list. Sign up below – unless you see a fancy pop-up thing. While I write this {25.02.13} it is still on my list 🎯 to do.

I haven’t got a clew about book promotion. How do I get into magazines and newspapers for instance?  If you know something – or someone who knows something – about it, please – share your ideas and favourite teachers with me. I know I can contact podcasters directly with a pitch for a conversation that will be interesting to their listeners, but I’m not sure who to contact. Do you have a suggestion? What is your favourite podcast?

Right now I’m working on my website. Thank you so much for visiting me here, by the way. What do you think? I would love to hear how you find your way around, and what you like and don’t. Not all the links are working yet πŸ™‚ Everything is still in development but the site hasn’t had visitors in a long time, so nobody other than you and me, and maybe a few others, will see my mistakes πŸ™‚

This is me launching before I’m ready πŸ™ƒ I feel vulnerable, excited and brave πŸ™‚

If you’re interested, I’m working on a free Life & Memoir Writing guide. At the moment I’m calling it ‘The Making of a Memoir,‘ but I think I like Making Memoir better – which do you prefer? Or do you have a different idea? Maybe I ‘should’ call it ‘Your free guide to Life & Memoir Writing‘. . . πŸ€” I’m thinking this will be a series of PDF downloads . . .

I’m pondering aloud on the web page here.

Help yourself to a copy. It’s not finished yet, so let me know how I can improve it. Is there anything you don’t agree with or think I should add? There’s something not right with the colours 🎨 None of the πŸ”— works – I have a few videos to record but my YouTube Channel is already live.

Next, I’m designing an email sequence to download the free guide. When that’s done – and if you have time – I would love it if you would test the PDF’s signup and copy. 🧑

I hope you have time to linger a while and have a good look around my newly refurbished online home. I am grateful you are here. 🧑 To contact me, Sign Up to the Circular or ead over to Instagram or our Facebook group to join the banter.

Much Love and Light

What does grief look like when an estranged parent dies without saying a last farewell?

In Speak #Truth Lies, I confront the complex emotions surrounding my estrangement from my father and how I grieved him after he died. passing. After fifteen years of separation, Vig and her young daughter Ruby arrive on AtlΓΈy Island to lay her father to rest.

ABOUT VIG

Hi, I’m Vig, an Irish-Norwegian writer and photographer. At twenty-four I bought a one-way ticket to Australia, never imagining the profound shapeshift the journey would have on my life. Together with my husband and daughter, I’ve travelled and lived in Norway, Ireland, England, Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, India, Thailand, Kenya, Egypt and more. Today, home is Castleconnell, a village on the banks of The River Shannon, close to Limerick City – where Frank McCourt’s family was from. How’s that for a setting? Our village might be small and often dressed in a grey cloak heavy with rain, but when the veil of mist rises from Shannon’s rapids, as they come towards you, passing below the footbridge – awe inspires wordsmithing. No wonder, you’re standing where the limerick came from.

A podcast for writers and readers of true life stories who love a good memoir. Deep thoughts and conversations about true life stories, writing, reading and snippets from my village life.
